The Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease

The gastro esophageal reflux disease is a situation that concerns the flowing backward of stomach acids into the esophagus. This can eventually cause damage to the lining of the gullet in some patients and also some other uncomfortable symptoms in other patients. The are many causes to gastro esophageal reflux disease but the most important factors is the incapability of the lower esophageal muscle from doing its function correctly.

The Lower Esophageal Sphincter

The esophagus is a passage tube in which lowers from the throat to our stomach. In between, we will come across a ring of musculature that connects the esophagus to the stomach. This is known as the lower esophageal sphincter. The closing and opening movement of the lower esophageal sphincter is to help prevent the gastroesophaeal reflux disease from occurring.

The lower esophageal sphincter of our body is supposed to help tighten around the opening of our stomach so as to keep the stomach fluids within it during, before and after each meal. But the incapability of this muscle subconsciously causes the gastro esophageal reflux disease because our stomach acids reflux out of our stomach and reach to our esophagus.

There are many reasons why the lower esophageal sphincter is not functioning well. It could be due the lower esophageal sphincter is weak thus causing the tightening motion to not tighten enough to prevent the stomach fluids from flowing back out of the stomach. Another major cause for gastro esophageal reflux disease is due to the lower esophageal sphincter is of the abnormal motions of the lower esophageal sphincter. This condition is known as transient LES relaxations and it usually occurs anytime without any pattern at all. Transient LES relaxations can last from several minutes thus allowing time for the stomach acids to make escape easier and often especially when the stomach is filled with food.

Another factor for gastro esophageal reflux disease related to lower esophageal sphincter is the slackness of the lower esophageal sphincter. Due to the distention in the stomach, it did not tighten properly and this allows the reflux of stomach fluids into our esophagus.

Although the breakdown of the lower esophageal sphincter is part of the major reasons of gastro esophageal reflux disease, it is not the only cause to it. Gastro esophageal reflux disease can also be caused by over consuming of acidic foods, carbonated foods and caffeinated beverages and especially foods of high in fats and oils. Some patients will also need to look into their posture in order to reduce gastro esophageal reflux disease. A slouched position will increase the chances of reflux whereas sleeping with an eminent head can help reduce this.
